the 10 best places to eat + drink in Sioux Falls

Don’t go hungry in Sioux Falls. Read this guide to the 10 best places to eat and drink in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, so that you’re always fueled up to explore this U.S. city.

Luke and I loved our time exploring Sioux Falls as guests of Experience Sioux Falls, and the food was one of the most unexpected surprises of our trip— particularly all the vegetarian and vegan options. At times, our travels through the Midwest United States left us scrambling to find side salads or anything else even remotely non-carnivorous. But, in Sioux Falls, we managed to find delicious veggie burgers, plant-based curry, and falafel platters. Not to mention the fact that we stumbled upon great coffee, craft beer, and sweet treats. Whatever your dietary requirements or cravings are, Sioux Falls likely has you covered.

For a small city of 117,000 people, Sioux Falls has an impressive number of places to eat and drink that will leave you feeling full and satisfied. We’ve compiled our recommendations into this comprehensive blog post so that it’s easy for your to find your way to your next food fix.

breakfast, brunch, + coffee

Josiah’s Coffee

What you really need to know about Josiah’s Coffee can be summed up in two words: cinnamon. rolls.

Queen City Bakery

Bagels and biscotti and brownies, oh my. Queen City Bakery focuses on delicious and accessible baking- no pretense. They won’t try to “wow” you with luxury treats. Instead, QCB has honed what they do and consistently delivers scrumptious baked goods that bring a nostalgic sense of comfort to the bellies of Sioux Falls. Everything is made from scratch daily with local ingredients. The coffee here isn’t bad at all, and you’ll need it to wash down the flaky croissant pastry.

Coffea Roasterie + Espresso Bar

This bright and airy coffee shop is a favourite amongst locals, especially the college crowd who frequent here for studying. There is a small pastry selection near the counter that is yummy enough, but nothing too extraordinary to write home about. The focus here really is on the coffee and the overall calming atmosphere. With local art hung minimally on the walls of this light and airy establishment, this is the perfect co-working space

The Breaks

The Breaks is a locally-owned coffee roasting company that doubles as a café. This is a great place for coffee enthusiasts to go, as The Breaks team has a deep knowledge of the science of coffee roasting and what makes a perfect espresso-based drink. I dare those who don’t like coffee to try The Breaks for a morning cup of joe and see what they think afterward.

The SOURCE COFFEE ROASTER + TAPROOM

Coffee and beer— what more could a person ask for? The Source serves up 16 craft beers on tap and Arabica coffee roasted on-site. This is another spot for coffee connoisseurs to go, especially those interested in small-batch roasting.

lunch + dinner

Fernson Brewing Co.

Fernson Brewing is right in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. Its food menu is filled with hearty options and snack-y bites that will have you happily While vegetarian menu items are limited, Fernson has delicious craft beer that hits the spot alongside their giant veggie burger (served with guacamole on top).

SANAA’S gourmet Mediterranean

Sanna’s is a popular lunch meeting spot near the arts hub thanks, in part, to the sharing platter. The atmosphere is casual and warm. Sanaa’s is my recommendation for those seeking healthy food, using organic and seasonal ingredients. They have a full vegan and vegetarian menu with loads of tasty options, and they cater to gluten-free diets too! Try the sweet potato cooked with carmelized onion and sun-dried tomato drizzled with tahini sauce or the lentils cooked in broth, mixed with mashed sweet potato and lemon zest.

Bread + Circus

I never expect much when it comes to veggie food in the Midwest, but the falafel plate here absolutely nailed it for me. Luke’s Curried Cauliflower was also banging. It was an added bonus that the serving sizes here were giant, which equals great value for money since the prices are super affordable. We loved Bread + Circus so much, that we actually came back on our way through Sioux Falls in late October and I got to try their vegan lentil soup, which was yet another menu winner.

snacks + other bits

CH Patisserie

CH Patisserie brings a taste of Paris to downtown Sioux Falls. The chic, modern patisserie opened its doors in 2013 and the bakery scene in Sioux Falls has never been the same. Sweet pastry smells waft outside when the door opens, the scent of éclairs, chocolate tarts, and macaroons filling the air. The interior of CH is minimal, light, and airy. It truly is an ideal spot for a coffee and a bonbon with a friend on a summer day, or to grab a hot chocolate on those frosty winter evenings. Not heading to Sioux Falls anytime soon? That’s okay. CH Patisserie has an online store with shipping services for those special sweet tooth cravings.

B+G Milky Way

Back in the 1950s, a drive-in was opened that now, 60 years later, has become a landmark establishment in the city. The original owners are Bertha and Guy Higgins, and that’s where the drive-in gets its initials from (B+G). The white building’s red signage has a true Americana feel that suits its offerings— hot dogs, ice cream, and cheese curds. Their signature strawberry ice cream, which is homemade, sells out frequently in the summer.
