Calvary is a can’t-miss coffee house in Hoi An. They not only roast their own coffee beans, but they built their espresso machine. The time and effort Calvary put into learning about the craft of coffee make it a fantastic addition to your coffee tour itinerary for Hoi An. Wooden chairs are scattered throughout a wooden building, open to the Hoi An breeze. There are bags of coffee beans that sit on open shelving, making the whole café smell of espresso. The friendly staff speak limited English, so please be patient (and kind) upon visiting.

Reaching Out Tea House
This café and its beautiful interiors are part of an NGO initiative started in 2000 that provides employment to local deaf citizens. To order, you fill out a provided slip of paper. Then, you turn over a wooden block that indicates the wait staff can collect the slip. When you’re ready to pay, after enjoying your Reaching Out Tea House is truly one of the most beautifully designed and decorated cafés in Hoi An. Everything from the teapots to the serving trays they are brought over on are gorgeous, with intricate gold detailing and traditional Vietnamese patterns. If you’re looking for a souvenir from Hoi An that gives back, buy a handcraft from the Reaching Out shop, all of which are made by physically impaired Vietnamese artisans who are paid a fair living wage by Reaching Out.

Sound of Silence
I’ll say this up top: Sound of Silence serves the best coffee I had in Hoi An. This beautiful little cafe is hidden away outside the main Hoi An traffic, near the less populated beach-- and IT. IS. PARADISE. I cycled to Sound of Silence early one morning, took a dip in the ocean, and completed my morning with a flat white that could have come from any café in Australia. I devoured my fruit crepes over breakfast and casually took a swim in the ocean. If you think that sounds picturesque, throw in the sound of crashing waves and a slow, circulating overhead fan and you have the makings of a perfect morning in Hoi An that I lived out multiple times over my month-long stay. The brunch at Sound of Silence is superb, and it’s reasonably priced. It is also the only meal served at Sound of Silence, so don’t miss it!

Rosie's Café
This may be my favorite café in Hoi An! It’s a firm favorite of mine due to Rosie's airy café interiors, filled with plants and tiny delicate details, its friendly café staff, and its mouthwatering menu. Found down a narrow alleyway in the Ancient Town, this sit-and-serve establishment offers delicious food at reasonable prices and beautiful coffee including cold brew served in glass bottles with gorgeous little labels and a biscuit on the side. The café also has an onsite store that sells sustainable, fair trade, handmade products like the bamboo toothbrush I bought and the hand-sewn kimono made of recycled fabric I still wear to this day.

Roast Coffee + Bakery
Roast's white interiors and green details make it a trendy little spot you might walk right passed. Situated next to a nail salon, Roast's narrow front entrance makes it easily missable; make sure you don't! Roast offers paninis, grilled sandwiches, cold case pastries, and classics like avocado toast topped with a poached egg. The staff is friendly, the menu is in English, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Donuts are less than USD $1, making it just the place to appease your sweet tooth for no dollars.

Nourish Eatery
Located on the edge of Hoi An, Nourish serves up barista-style coffee with beans roasted in Da Lat, Vietnam, and I love local cafés serving local products. They also serve fresh smoothie bowls, a bevy of brunch dishes, and flavor-packed vegan options. Nourish does both coffee and food extremely well, so it’s no surprise I frequented it at breakfast and lunch during my month in Vietnam. This is absolutely the place for plant-based folks in Hoi An. Coffee aficionados can delight in Nourish’s French press and digital nomads can take advantage of the cafés workspace.

Alley Artist Café

The coffee at Alley is nothing to write home about, but its hidden location down an alley makes it a cute little spot to drop in for an iced Americano in the middle of a sticky Hoi An day. You order from a window and sit in the alley on mix-matched chairs covered from the sun. Hanging greenery gives the place a personal touch. Seating is extremely limited and the narrow setting makes it a spot you wouldn't want to do more than drink from. Alley Artist Café is truly the place in Hoi An for chilled conversation over coffee with friends surrounded by old town.

Buttercup
Buttercup is the sister café of Rosie’s. It’s equally as beautiful as Rosie’s and serves equally phenomenal brunch. The coffee at Buttercup is exceptional and, along with traditional Vietnamese coffee variation, the café has a number of signature drinks, ranging from its Pinã Earl Grey (Earl Grey tea, honey, and pineapple juice) and its Hint of Lemon (espresso, milk foam, honey, and lemon zest). The atmosphere at Buttercup is relaxed and friendly, with garden seating available for those eager to bask in the Vietnamese sun.

MUN Coffee is in a prime location in a narrow yellow building in Hoi An's Ancient Town. It might be lacking in atmosphere and quirks, but it's air-conditioned and the iced coconut coffee is outrageously good. The food menu is extremely limited, comprised mostly of granola and cabinet pastries. Even so, the menu is in both Vietnamese and English, and food or no food, you’ll want to grab an iced coconut coffee and head to the upstairs terrace. I did exactly this one morning en route to a client meeting, and the views of the street below provided some hilarious morning entertainment. MUN is a fantastic workspace for digital nomads and remote workers!

The Espresso Station
I went to The Espresso Station for a meeting with a photographer, but what I got was a seriously cool coffee experience. Espresso Station’s signature coffee is cold brew that's been frozen into ice cubes and arrives with a serving of hot milk (coconut and soy milk options are available) which you then pour over the coffee ice cubes. As the cubes melt, the colors are fantastic and the smell of the espresso is so good. There is a small food menu at the café and indoor seating for those who like to be out of the sun. This is a very social café that’s usually buzzing with groups chatting, a lively music soundtrack, and general socializing. Espresso Station’s bright yellow exterior makes it one of the most aesthetic cafés in Hoi An, and one you won’t want to miss on your travels.

Avos + Mangos
Avos + Mangos is a narrow cafe that you might otherwise walk right past. You should probably like avocados and mangos if you're going to eat at the cafe since everything on the menu has at least one of the two as an ingredient. The owners make everything fresh and serve it up with smiling faces. The watermelon cold-pressed juice was absolutely refreshing. I had a Vietnamese coffee here one afternoon and it was equally delicious. The adorable little avocado and mango decor details make the space extra cute. Expect to get your veggie and fruit intake delivered in creative ways here, like mango and peanut butter toast! The coffee itself is delicious, but the fresh produce at Avos + Mangos hits the spot in the Vietnam heat.

With art on the walls and short tables made of crates, Cafe Hoang feels like a locals-only type of joint. The concrete floors and super basic coffee menu give off a feeling of serious minimal-effort-maximum-cool-factor. Go during the evening when the lights are dim for a gritty night caffeine cap. This is a true dive-bar-meets-café experience in Hoi An that can’t be missed.

Dingo Deli
Dingo Deli is an establishment among expats in Hoi An, although I actually wouldn't consider it a true "cafe." Dingo serves up Lavazza Italian coffee in the form of lattes, iced Americanos, espresso, and every other caffeinated beverage that should be on a cafe menu. The western-owned and operated bakery, restaurant and delicatessen is a massive hit with every foreigner looking for a taste of home in the form of giant portions. The wonderful food includes vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Dingo offers something simple I miss from the U.S. all the time-- unlimited drip coffee refills. For a set price, you can order a cup of joe and a friendly staff member will continue to refill it at no extra charge to you.

I recommend the 47 Lê Lợi location, where you can enjoy your coffee from balcony seating.

Phin Coffee
Tucked away amongst the winding alleyways of Hoi An’s Ancient Town, Phin is worth seeking out. The café has garden seating and friendly and knowledgable staff who love sharing their own affinity for the ritual of slowly made coffee. If you visit Phin, there’s only one coffee drink to try, not because it’s the only coffee on offer, but because, as the café’s namesake, it is the drink they’ve mastered. If you’re really into coffee, you can order a Phon tasting set, allowing you to try a number of carefully curated coffee blends.
