Instagrammable Hamilton: surprising street art in Hamilton, New Zealand + where to find it

Yeah, you read that right.

It’s probably shocking to even see an “Instagram guide” blog relating to Hamilton because, let’s be honest, if you were traveling through New Zealand, Hamilton is not a place you’d put on your list of “must-sees”.

Despite my preconceived notions about Hamilton, and the reputation that precedes the town, I was stunned to find out how artsy Hamilton has become in recent years. There is a slew of street art emerging in the city that has created a hip, young vibe for the area that took me by total surprise. Is it a competitor with Wellington for creative hub of New Zealand? Ha! Ummm, no. But it still seems like an art scene is brewing in Hamilton…

ANZAC PARADE

A stroll down the newly renamed Anzac Parade will give you plenty of colour to photograph! Murals like the one above only scratch the surface of what the walk along the {busy} road offers. On my way to a cafe one day, I stopped and noticed that the side of almost every gym, community center, and theater I’d seen had been art-ed up.

VICTORIA STREET

Located at the south end of Victoria Street {right next to Yalla Yalla cafe} is a massive statue of Riff Raff. You’ll know who he is if you’re a fan of the cult classic film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What you might not know is why the statue is there and what Riff Raff has to do with Hamilton, New Zealand. Richard O'Brien, the creator and writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show lived in Hamilton and worked next door to the Embassy Theatre {which is no longer standing}.

grey street

Down Grey Street you’ll find Chinese food takeaways, secondhand shops, trendy cafes, and plenty of side-street murals. I like to think of Grey Street as a {sort of, kind of} imitation of Cuba Street in the making. You might find buskers singing Ed Sheeran cover songs as people sit outside cafes {if the weather permits}, giving the street a very “hipster” energy. Turn off main Grey Street and almost any alleyway you walk down will be covered in larger than life murals.

love grove lane

Down a side street off of Grey Street is Love Grove Lane. If you’re lucky and a car isn’t parked in front of the floral inspired mural, it’s a great place to snap a photo. This alleyway is made up of The Flower Crate, Hearth Juice Bar & Grocer, Sun Salute Yoga Centre, and GG’s café. Potted plants and rustic furniture sit outside the shops down the lane making the place feel more like a hippie community than a row of businesses. It’s the perfect road if you’re looking for flowers, green juices, a yoga class or a coffee.
